You may have been told that you need to “ground yourself,” but are unsure of what this means. If you are constantly consumed by your thoughts and are not focused on the present, you are probably not grounded.
Grounding can be achieved when you come to realization that the concept of time was created by man. Einstein said, “Time doesn’t exist.” There is no past or future, only the present (right now). If you become aware of the now, you can stop worrying about the past and future.
It may be difficult to stop thinking about what-if’s of the past, but you cannot change the past. You can certainly build your own future, and sometimes that can become overwhelming thinking about goals and steps to take in order to achieve the best outcome (in your mind).
Sometimes if you are not grounded, the universe sends a physical jolt in order to help bring your focus back to your physical self. This can sometimes be surprising or even physically painful, but serves as a strong signal to ground ourselves.
If we ground ourselves, we become attuned to the present, the now. We relinquish the energy emitted from others that has clung to us along the way. We let go of the clutter in our minds and release built-up energy.
How do we become grounded? There are some simple ways to achieve this, but they do require some effort.
Focus on the Now
When you go somewhere or do anything, focus on your physical senses and what you get from the sights, the smells, the sounds. Notice the simplicity and beauty in things. Let go of the “what could have beens” of the past, and the “what-if’s” of the future. Be present in the now. Don’t dwell on what you have to do tomorrow, next week, or next month. Savor the moments happening at this very instance.
Take off your shoes, put your feet on the ground, and feel the earth. Take a walk in the grass. Connect with mother nature. Soak up the energy of the sun, and feel the coolness or warmth from the earth. If you live near the coast, visit the beach – feel the crunch of the sand, listen to the waves of the ocean. Visit a park or nature preserve – just sit and listen to the life happening all around you that you get to experience in your physical body.
Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) will enjoy this method and usually practice it because they naturally have a strong connection to the earth. However, everyone else can and should practice this method as well.
During exercise, our mind greatly focuses on our physical body. We are aware of the areas being worked, and can feel the physical impact. Remind yourself that even though you are energy, it is still within your physical body which has to be connected to the physical world.
Clear your head of the excess. You cannot affect the past. Learn from it, but do not bring it with you into the now. Listen to the sounds around you. Focus on your breathing, each breath in and out. If you feel a thought or worry coming into your mind, just let it go.
Conducting a root chakra meditation can help to ground you. Your root chakra is the energy vortex located at the base of your spine, and is your foundation – the first chakra, corresponding to the color red. Certain stones that are good for this are red Jasper, Ruby, Garnet, Hematite, and Magnetite.
Clear the Air
Sage smudging an area can help clear excess energy in order to let you feel grounded. To smudge an area with sage, you need a sage bundle. Light the end of the sage bundle, and blow it out (make sure the flame has completely gone out). Carefully wave the bundle around the area, allowing the smoke to permeate the air, then place the bundle on a heatproof plate. Always exercise caution when working with fire.
Using an incense, or using sage oil on an oil warmer with a tealight candle can also help clear the air.
Air (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) and fire (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) signs will usually be drawn to this method, finding it to be the most effective means to ground themselves.
Take a bath or long shower, and visualize the negative energy flowing down the drain. Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) are especially drawn to methods of energy release via water. You can even amplify your grounding by lighting candles around the bath.
You can also get a massage and focus on your breathing, the motions, and tension being released from your muscles. Focus and bring your mind into the now, while enjoying yourself.
