Be sure to cleanse your crystals as soon as you get them. If you purchase one from a store/internet or received it from someone, you definitely need to cleanse your crystals before you begin to use them! Cleansing crystals removes negative energy absorbed from others who have handled them. All crystals should be cleansed, unless you actually find them in the ground.
It is also important to cleanse your crystals and stones after conducting a crystal healing.
Cleansing your crystals is easy! You can use either of the methods below, depending on your intuition. You will instinctually know the best method for each crystal/stone you plan to work with.
Returning your crystals and stones to the Earth is one of the best ways to cleanse them of their negative energy, especially if it is for the initial cleanse. To return them to the Earth, place them into a cloth bag to ensure they do not get dirty. Bury the bag in your yard, or even a potted plant, and leave them for at least 24 hours. If they do get dirty, you can brush them off, and they will be ready for charging with your intentions.
Sage removes and transmutes negative energy from any space. You can also use it to cleanse your crystals! Light a sage bundle, blow it out, and pass your crystals and stones through the smoke. This method is easy and safer than using water, but is not as thorough as burying. This method can also be used after burying for extra cleansing.
The Native Americans used a 7-day cleanse for their crystals and stones, using distilled water and sea salt. To use the water method – combine distilled water and sea salt in a bowl. Let it sit for seven days and seven nights. You can also gather water from the sea, or even collect rainwater to cleanse your crystals.
It is very important to be sure your stone can handle being immersed in water. Some may dissolve, like Selenite. Some may become toxic, like Malachite. Others may rust, such as stones with iron in them. Quartz crystals are the best to use for this method, as they have a Mohs hardness of 7 and are unlikely to be harmed by water. If your crystal/stone has a Mohs hardness of less than 5 (such as Calcite & Fluorite, among others), it is best not to use this method.
Some may disagree that crystals and stones can be cleansed with sound, and instead have to be cleansed by the elements – earth, air, fire, or water. However, loud sound waves can also transmute negative energy, returning your crystals’ energy to their normal oscillatory rate. To use sound, place your crystals near something loud – it can be a Tibetan singing bowl, quartz singing bowl, Tibetan chime, or even a loud amp/speaker. To use a Tibetan singing bowl or a quartz singing bowl (made of crystal quartz), place your stone/crystals near the outside of the bowl. Tap the outside of the bowl with the striker, and press it against the bowl as you move it around the rim. This will produce a very loud sound, depending on the speed you move the striker.
Many have found this method to be quickest, yet still effective. To cleanse your crystals using your own energy, focus on white light emanating through your body, down your arm and through the crystal/stone. Visualize the positive energy engulfing the crystal/stone, returning it back to its ideal frequency. Hold this for at least 15 seconds. This method is most effective when your own vibration is high – if it is low, you may transmit negative energy.
