What is success? What does it mean to be successful?
First, you have to figure out what you value the most. If you value time to spend with your family, time for hobbies, and time to invest in activities that make you a better person, then you may equate free time to success.
Many people believe that just having a lot of money means you are successful. However, if you are part of the corporate workforce, much of your life is dictated by your employer and they most likely define success differently than you do. You may be putting in a lot of hours at your job but getting nothing back spiritually. Your soul may not be nurtured. In the U.S., a full-time corporate work week is 40 hours. If you estimate an hour per day of driving to and from work (some spend more, some spend less), and an hour per day for a break, that is 50 hours. There are 120 total hours in a typical 5 day work week. Around 40% of that time is spent traveling to and from work and working. If you average 8 hours of sleep per night, that equals 33% of your day. This leaves you only 27% of your time during the work week to focus on YOU.
You’re only afforded two days of free time at the end of your work week for a break. So many people savor the weekend, and get very distressed when it ends. That is because we are overworked! Working longer hours does NOT result in higher productivity, unless we are spiritually fulfilled.
Earned from this work is compensation to pay for homes we’re barely in, and activities we barely have any time to do. Is this success? Is this the type of “career” you have? In order to feel fulfilled, we need to receive more than just money – we have to feel like we are fulfilling our purpose.
To be truly successful, your job should not feel like work. It should enable you to grow and expand your consciousness, so you become the ideal version of yourself! Find what you are passionate about – something that consumes you, that makes you happy, that makes you look forward to free time so you can actually DO it. Your passion is what defines you.
